Assignment for 3/21/16
Today we're classifying types of organisms and exploring how they interact in their ecosystems:
PRODUCERS VS. CONSUMERS...
1. Go to: Producers, Consumers, & Decomposers Game
For each organism, decide whether it is a producer, consumer, or decomposer and watch the animations to see if you are correct!
CAUTION: Decomposers are a specific kind of CONSUMER.
2. Create a chart in your journal classifying the organisms in the game. Include a drawing for each type.
3. Then create a definition for each type of organism that works for ALL the examples in the game:
- PRODUCER
- CONSUMER
- DECOMPOSER
4. Next, go to: Food Chain Game
Drag and drop the producers and consumers in the correct order to complete the food chain.
- What do you notice about the producers in any food chain? (WRITE THIS IN YOUR JOURNAL!)
- What do the arrows ----> in a food chain represent?
- What error do you see in the arrows in the bigger food chains that involve decomposers?
EXPLORING PRODUCERS' FAVORITE CHEMICAL REACTION...
5. Now go to: What Plants Need
Click on the organelles and adjust the conditions for the producer until it thrives! Then try out different conditions and see how they would affect the producer and how they affect the function of its cells' organelles!
5. Finally, go to: Virtual Lab #1
Bubbles are given off by the plant through photosynthesis. By measuring the rate at which the bubbles are produced it is possible to tell how fast the plant is photosynthesizing. Read and follow the directions on how to use this lab simulator. Press start and record the bubbles per minute for each of the following light distances. Then graph your data (be sure to label each axis)!

Go to:
http://joshworth.com/dev/pixelspace/pixelspace_solarsystem.html
Get ready to scroll a lot!!!
This is a tediously accurate model of our Solar System :).
Scroll through and discover:
- how far away each of the planets are from the Sun
- how far the moon is from the Earth
- and how far the next closest celestial body is from our Solar System
Choose a distance to represent in your group's drawing of distance in space! You only have 15 minutes for this part of the activity!
When we return to the desks, you'll learn how scientists created a much better unit than kilometers or miles to measure distances and sizes in space!
